The most common way tourists lose money in Pattaya nightlife is a padded bar tab — here's exactly how the check-bin overcharge works and how to watch for it.

The most common way tourists lose money in Pattaya's nightlife isn't a dramatic scam — it's a padded bar tab that's easy to miss if you're not paying attention.

How the "check bin" overcharge actually works

Most Pattaya bars track your order on small paper slips dropped into a plastic cup on your table — the check bin. The overcharge is simple: a staff member drops in an extra slip for a drink you didn't order, or quietly inflates the price written on a slip you did order. It's aimed at tables that are drinking, distracted, or not watching the bin.

Unwanted "lady drinks" and surprise service charges

A frequently reported version: a "lady drink" appears on your bill that you never ordered or agreed to buy. Separately, some venues add a service charge that only shows up at checkout, not on the drink menu you saw earlier in the night.

How to actually protect yourself

  • Keep the check bin in front of you, not on a different part of the table.
  • Glance at each slip as it's dropped in — visibly, so staff can see you're tracking it.
  • Count every slip against what you actually ordered before paying.
  • If the bill is wrong, stay calm, don't pay immediately, and ask to call the tourist police at 1155 if it isn't resolved on the spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this specific to certain bars, or should I watch for it everywhere?

The check-bin system itself is standard across most Pattaya bars — it's not inherently a scam, it's just how tabs are tracked. The overcharge risk comes from not watching it, not from the system itself.

What number do I call if a bar won't fix an overcharge?

1155 — the Thailand tourist police hotline.

What's a "lady drink" and why would it appear on my bill unsolicited?

It's a drink bought for staff/hostesses, priced separately from regular drinks. The scam version is one appearing on your tab that you never agreed to buy — check for it specifically when reviewing slips.
